These applications on the surface do have some appeal. We have yet to meet anyone who enjoys cleaning out their gutters. Although if you have a GEMS Membership, we take care of gutter cleaning for you. It is also true that leaves and debris can clog cutters and create a host of other issues.
There is an under appreciated challenge that can come from these aftermarket installations. Many times these meshes/barriers can obstruct the flow of water to the gutter systems. This can create an overflow of water that bypasses the gutters and goes into the yard which is exactly what you don't want to have happen.
We have had several Owners who we have built homes for request us to determine why the water was pouring off their roofs and not being collected by their gutters. In both circumstances we determined that our Owners had an aftermarket company install alternative products without evaluating the water flow and capacity required. This created a situation where the water would shoot over the top of the gutter.
When we build a new home, our rain gutter systems are designed specifically for each home. Various factors can determine your gutter system design, including; the type of roofing material, the amount of roof area flowing to each gutter, valley locations and downspout locations. Miss calculating any of these factors can lead to a system failure.
When an aftermarket company offers to do work on your gutters without accounting for the same data points our teams do it is possible for the gutter system to fail. Often these issues are not discovered until there is a major rain event so there may be a false sense of security during more modest rain events. A failing gutter system can lead to other issues as well and modifications to your gutters may void any applicable warranties from your builder.
This is not to say that all aftermarket companies will create issues, however, it can be risky. If you are seeking gutter updates or improvements, we recommend you visit with your builder and/or the original installation company. They will be most apt to know your home and what is required to adequately manage the roof water flow.
