One of our GEMS Members called us recently with a request that had nothing to do with their home. Their daughter was moving into her first apartment in Dallas, and somewhere between the moving truck and the end of the day, the bed never got assembled — and furniture assembly was the last thing on anyone’s mind at that point. If you have ever moved, you know how that goes. By the time everything is inside and the adrenaline wears off, you are running on empty and the last thing you want to do is sort through Ikea hardware and a wordless instruction sheet.

So they called us. Not a moving company or a handyman they found online — us. That phone call tells you more about GEMS than anything we could put in a brochure.
Think of Us Like Your Uncle With a Toolbox

We sent one of our service technicians over to her apartment after working hours. He showed up with his tools, found the flat-pack box, and got to work. If you have assembled an Ikea bed before, you already know it is a legitimate undertaking — panels, slats, wooden dowels, a bag of assorted hardware, and instructions that assume you have a degree in visual interpretation. He worked through it carefully and did not leave until it was done and done right.
Why We Do This

We want to be straightforward about something: we did not go over there for a tip, and we did not go over there expecting to be invited to dinner. Our technician was not doing anyone a favor in the casual sense of the word. He was doing his job, because this is what the job looks like when you have been trusted by a family for years. When you build that kind of relationship with someone — when they have handed you the keys to their home and relied on you to take care of it — showing up for the things that matter to them is not extra. It is the point.
