Lighting is one of the most underestimated design elements in a home. People spend months selecting flooring, cabinetry, and countertops, but lighting decisions can shape how you feel in your home. At Garabedian Properties, we use Lutron Ketra Smart Home Lighting paired with Homeworks control panels because they provide a level of performance and flexibility that traditional lighting simply cannot match.

We discussed this in detail during Episode 5 of Uniqueness… “Built-In”, where we sat down with lighting specialists to explain why intelligent lighting is becoming a standard feature in modern luxury homes.

Below are several reasons we continue to spec Ketra in our projects.

Lighting That Changes With the Day

Ketra lighting uses what is known as human-centric lighting. This smart home lighting system automatically adjusts the color temperature of light throughout the day to match the natural light outside.

During the day, the light becomes brighter and cooler to promote energy and focus. In the evening, the system shifts to warmer tones that help the body relax.

Anyone who has ever walked into a kitchen late at night and been blasted with bright grocery-store lighting understands why this matters. The right lighting temperature keeps the home comfortable at every hour.

Accurate Color Rendering

Another reason we prefer Ketra is the quality of light itself.

Lighting is measured by something called a Color Rendering Index (CRI). This measurement indicates how accurately a light source displays color compared to natural sunlight.

  • 0–55 (poor)
  • 55–70 (fair)
  • 70–85 (good)
  • 85–90 (very good)
  • 90–100 (excellent).

Ketra lighting operates at 90+ CRI, which means materials appear much closer to how they would look outdoors. With poor lighting, white cabinets can look yellow, artwork can appear dull, and fabrics can lose their depth. High-quality lighting reveals the true colors of the materials our Owners invest in.

Artwork and Materials Look Better

Museums and galleries spend tremendous time perfecting lighting because it changes how people experience artwork.

Ketra lighting is used in several major art institutions because it enhances the vibrancy of materials and artwork. The same principle applies inside a home.

When lighting is done correctly:

  • Artwork appears richer
  • Wood grains become more pronounced
  • Textiles show more depth
  • Stone and tile surfaces reveal their natural variation

The lighting itself becomes invisible, while the materials become the focus.

Automation That Supports Daily Life

Ketra lighting works together with Homeworks control systems, allowing the home to respond automatically to daily routines.

For example, lighting scenes can be created for:

  • Entertaining
  • Movie watching
  • Late-night kitchen visits
  • Morning routines

Instead of adjusting multiple switches, Owners can simply press a button—or automate the entire process.

The system can also include features like vacation mode, which randomly activates lights to make the home appear occupied when Owners are away.

Long-Term Reliability

Many homeowners have experienced the frustration of replacing LED bulbs far sooner than expected.

Ketra lighting is engineered for longevity, with a rated lifespan of approximately 50,000 hours, which can translate to roughly 17 years of use under typical conditions.

This reliability matters especially in homes with high ceilings or difficult-to-access fixtures.

Flexibility in New Construction and Renovations

While Ketra lighting is ideal for new construction, it can also be incorporated into existing homes.

In some cases, specialized bulbs can be installed into existing fixtures and integrated with Lutron systems without major structural work. This flexibility allows homeowners to upgrade lighting without completely rebuilding their electrical systems.
