When a Bat Moves into Your Patio: A GEMS Story

When we create beautiful outdoor spaces for our Owners — places to relax, entertain family, and enjoy North Texas evenings — every once in awhile, unwanted guests decide they would like to enjoy those spaces, too.

Recently, one of our Owners discovered an unexpected guest living in the motorized shade of their luxury outdoor patio.

Tucked inside the housing of the shade system was a small bat that had decided the patio was a good place to rest.

The First Priority: Protect Our Owners

When something unusual appears in a home, the natural reaction can be panic—especially when it involves wildlife.

Straight-on shot of bat flying through the air with wings splayed out by its sides.

Imagine this thing comes flying out at you — we think we will pass! Bats can carry rabies and a host of other viruses, and because they rely on echolocation rather than sight, a startled bat in a confined patio space could easily nip a person or a curious four-legged friend.

Instead of rushing into a situation that could put our Owners in danger or damage their property, our team assessed the situation first. The bat had taken shelter in the motorized shade housing, which meant there was a risk that an improper removal could damage the shade system or create unnecessary stress for the animal.

Bringing in the Right Professional

We coordinated with a trusted pest control professional who specializes in humane wildlife removal.

The bat was safely removed from the patio shade housing and released away from the home without injury. No damage was done to the shade system, and our Owners did not have to deal with the unpleasant task of trying to remove the animal themselves.

Most importantly, the situation was handled quickly and calmly — turning what could have been a stressful experience into a simple solution.
